Olaf Scholz has described a recent proliferation of physical attacks on politicians as “outrageous and cowardly”.

The German chancellor was speaking after the latest assault, on Franziska Giffey, a former mayor of Berlin and a Social Democrat Party ally of Scholz. She was taken to hospital on Tuesday after being hit on the head with a bag containing a heavy object in a public library.

“Violence does not belong in a democratic debate. Decent and reasonable people are clearly standing against it — and they are the majority!” Scholz said on Twitter/X.
