TOKYO, Jan 23 (KUNA) -- Tokyo stocks extended their winning streak for a third straight session on Tuesday, with a key index ending above the 24,000 mark for the first time in more than 26 years following a deal by US senators to end the federal government shutdown and the Japanese central bank's board meeting.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) rose 307.82 points, or 1.29 percent, from Monday to 24,124.15, its highest finish since Nov. 14, 1991.
The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index, which includes all shares on the market's First Section on the TSE, was also up 19.15 points, or 1.01 percent, to 1,911.07.
Investors sentiment was boosted after US lawmakers reached a deal to end the government shutdown.
The Bank of Japan's decision to keep monetary policy steady following a two-day meeting on Tuesday also cheered the market. (end) mk.mb
