US political woes, Spain attack extends Tokyo stocks losing streak

TOKYO, Aug 18 (KUNA) -- Tokyo stocks extended their losing streak for a third straight session on Friday, with a key index ending at a 3.5-month low on political turmoil in the US and a terrorist attack in Spain.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) lost 232.22 points, or 1.18 percent, from Thursday to 19,470.41, its lowest finish since May 2.
The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index, which includes all shares on the TSE's first section, was also down 17.46 points, or 1.08 percent, to 1,597.36.
A slide on Wall Street overnight amid US political woes and the deadly attack in the northeastern Spanish city of Barcelona dampened investor sentiment. In the currency markets, at 04:00 p.m. (07:00 GMT), the US dollar traded at JPY 109.15-16 versus JPY 109.53-63 in New York and JPY 109.92-93 in Tokyo at 05:00 p.m. Thursday. (end) mk.gta
